We’ll travel to Ramillies, where Marlborough’s tactical brilliance saw his army rout the opposition in hours and led to the allies’ greatest series of victories in the War of Spanish Succession. After a break for lunch we’ll continue to Elixheim, where the Duke’s success in 1705 was critical to his future battle at Ramillies.
We go to Oudenarde where, after a series of French successes, Marlborough marshalled his troops to attack and take the only remaining French fortress along the Scheldt River. You’ll explore the watery crossing points and the key sites. Our return route includes a visit to the battlefields of Leuze-en-Hainault (1693) or Fontenoy (1745).
Our tour reaches Malplaquet and we’ll take a walking tour of the site where the two forces clashed in one of the most brutal battles of the time - the casualties caused the British nation to question whether the sacrifices could ever be worth the rewards.
Guests have a free morning to explore Mons or enjoy the facilities of the hotel, before we take them back to Brussels Eurostar terminal.
